High Speed Internet in Somers

ADSL2+ Coverage

Many of our members have expressed frustration at both the lack of universal access to a high-speed internet service in Somers (known as ADSL or ADSL2+) and the sometimes very slow performance of the wireless 3G coverage.

We believe that the residents of Somers should have access to an equitable and universal broadband service at a speed and cost enjoyed by most subscribers across Australia.  At this time we do not. Moreover we do not anticipate that Somers will be connected to the NBN network for many years, if ever.

The frustration felt by our community has been further heightened by a number of factors :

  1. Websites that purport to show that all Somers Residents can access an ADSL service are incorrect.
  2. Many residents have called to order this service only to be told that their individual phone line will not support the service. The reason given is that the subscriber is too far away from the exchange at Balnarring. (The nominal maximum distance is 4 kms).
  3. Some members have been refused this service while their next door neighbour is connected.
  4. There are examples of homes being refused a service while friends who live much further from Balnarring are enjoying a relatively fast broad band service on ADSL.
  5. Many residents have been forced onto the 3G wireless system at a higher cost and are increasingly finding that, at certain times of the day, the service is very slow.
  6. In the roll out of the NBN network we cannot anticipate that a seaside village the size of Somers will be connected with fibre to the home until well into the roll-out of this program if ever!. NBN Co refuses to give dates for any specific communities at this time.

We believe that the best way to get a reasonable hearing from the Internet Service Providers is for the Somers community to show their displeasure with the current situation and we invite members and all residents of Somers to register their views.

For those of you who have some skills in accessing the internet we would encourage you to visit the following site and record the download speed of your current service. If you are able to run this test for your service please include the results in your response to the SRA.
