Somers Information
Somers is a small town with a population of 1345 according to the 2006 census. Located 72 km south east of Melbourne, well off the main road running from Melbourne to Flinders, it is surrounded by the sea, farmland and nature reserves. It is this isolation that makes Somers such a special place which retains an essentially rural character despite its relatively close proximity to Melbourne.
Somers has from the very start been an attractive destination to holiday or live for those who valued a quieter lifestyle, away from the bright lights and traffic so typical of the beach resorts on the other side of the Mornington Peninsula. It has grown slowly, remaining a secret from most, and has generally retained its charm over its history of 80 years.
Our Community
Somers has a Primary School, a Kindergarten, a caravan park, a General Store ("The Somers General Store"), a CFA (Country Fire Authority) Fire Station, tennis courts, a cricket ground, Petanque Court, The Coolart Wetlands, Lord Somers Camp, the Education Department School Camp (originally built for the RAAF, then used to accommodate immigrants) and various parks, gardens and reserves.
There are no shopping strips or centres and no supermarkets. The newly refurbished General Store and cafe has become very popular with both local residents and visitors as a pleasant meeting /social venue for a meal or coffee. For other forms of commercial service, Balnarring and Hastings are usually the main places to go.
Somers is also home to The Somers Yacht Club which houses the WSC Marine Rescue Facility. This service contributes greatly to the safety of Western Port Bay through the use of crash boats sent out to help capsized skippers and crew, or those in other forms of trouble.
